Setting a challenging goal for yourself can be an extremely rewarding experience. It forces you to grow personally, and helps you to reap benefits that you may previously have thought unlikely. However, it’s one thing to set a goal, but it is another thing to stick with it and make a real difference!

At Mondelēz International, one of our main business goals is to grow our people. To do this, we support our teams to set goals that allow them to grow, both personally and professionally. Firstly, make sure your goal is inspiring – something that you are genuinely enthusiastic about, and will help you stay motivated. Visualize yourself reaching your goal – how does it feel?

But your goal must also be achievable. Make sure it’s realistic so you don't end up feeling discouraged or frustrated! An achievable goal is one that will challenge your skills and abilities, but that’s still within your control.

A goal should be outcome-based — what’s the end result you’ll achieve? Make sure you know how you will measure success.

Discussing your goals with someone will help you understand what really matters to you, and increase your commitment to them.

Writing down your goals helps you to be more specific. It also helps you commit to them.

Once you identify what you want to focus your development on, put concrete plans in place to achieve your desired outcomes.

Anticipate setbacks – this will help make sure you’re prepared to deal with them. List potential obstacles, and consider how you can overcome them, and who might be able to help.

Overcome unexpected setbacks by recognizing what caused the problem and keeping a positive attitude, before refocusing on your goal and resuming with a new plan.

Finally, create the time to review and update your goals on a regular basis to help you remain focused on your performance and growth.
